Sunday at 3 PM: When Australia Buys Homes: New Data from OpenLot.com.au

MELBOURNE (8 December 2024) — OpenLot.com.au's data on 100,000 buyer enquiries reveals a sharp property enquiry pattern: Sundays at 3 PM are the hottest time of the week for new home hunting.

Key Findings:

  • 42% more enquiries on Sunday
  • Peak enquiry time: 3-4 PM window
  • Most active search hours: 11 AM to 10 PM
Increase in Daily Inquiries Compared to FridayIncrease in Hourly Inquiries Compared to 3 AM

Qi Chen, CEO and founder of OpenLot.com.au, the Australian consumer portal for new housing, said:

"The 3 PM window isn't accidental. On weekends, buyers have finished chores, settled in, and are ready to make serious decisions. On weekdays, the 3 PM window represents the mid-afternoon break when workers pause, step away from tasks, and research property. It's prime time when professionals can quickly explore housing options during work hours, expecting fast responses from agents.

"Technology has transformed property hunting. Buyers now have data, tools, and platforms that give them unprecedented research power. They're not just looking—they're analysing, comparing, and making informed decisions in precise, targeted windows.

"Real estate isn't just about properties anymore. It's about understanding buyer behavior, technological trends, and how Australians use their limited personal time. Those who adapt will win, and it’s for them that we are releasing this data.

“If you sell new houses and land, there’s an obvious conclusion. You should start working later. Some staff may want to shift their schedule to start at 11 am or noon and work as late as 9 PM, so they can be present when buyers are inquiring. The faster you reply to an inquiry, the better the chances of getting to a sale.

“When it comes to days of the week, buyers make the most enquiries on Sunday, followed by the two shoulder days of Monday and Saturday. Rounding out the top days of the week are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Friday has the fewest enquiries of any day of the week.

“Even though homebuyers make 42% more enquiries on Sunday, they don’t take a single day off. If you had to choose two days during the week when vendors can get a break and new home buyers are least active, you would have to settle on Thursday and Friday, but even on Thursday and Friday, vendors still receive a substantial number of enquiries.”
